Gunlock State Park

Gunlock State Park is a fun place for water sports in Utah. Located in the southwestern part of the state, it offers fishing, camping, boating and swimming.

Things to do at Gunlock

The main feature of Gunlock State Park is the 240-acre reservoir. The park has boat-launching facilities and the water provides an ideal spot for boating, fishing, swimming and other water sports, such as water-skiing and tubing. Largemouth bass and channel fish are the most popular specimens found in the reservoir. Primitive campsites are available, but there are no flush toilets or potable water, so make sure to bring plenty of your own drinking water. The park also has picnic tables. Gunlock State Park is closed November through February, but is open 24 hours a day during the warmer months.

Gunlock's history and location

Gunlock State Park is located 15 miles from the town of St. George and almost 320 miles south of Salt Lake City. The park is named for the nearby community of Gunlock, which honors its first settler, William "Gunlock Will" Hamblin. This Mormon pioneer from Ohio earned his nickname as a skilled gunsmith. The country road that takes you to the park is a portion of the Old Spanish Trail, the favored path of horsemen traveling to California until the time of the California Gold Rush.

If you live in or plan a visit to Utah and want a primitive place to escape hectic modern life and relax on the water, then Gunlock State Park is the answer. Pay only seven dollars for a day of fun, and even less if you are a Utah senior citizen!
