Canyonlands National Park
Canyonlands National Park protects thousands of acres of spectacular landscapes that were eroded into canyons, buttes and mesas by the mighty Colorado River and its tributaries. This large park can keep you busy for weeks at a time, but there are a few highlights you must see before you leave. The park is divided into four sections by the Green and Colorado Rivers. These include the Island in the Sky, the Maze, the Needles and the rivers themselves.
Island in the Sky
This portion of the park is considered the most accessible. Visit multiple scenic overlooks, explore the sights along the paved drive or pull off to hike one of the many trails. The Island in the Sky Visitor Center is located about a 40 minute drive from Moab, Utah, and offers exhibits and ranger-guided interpretive walks. Camping is available at the Willow Flat Campground.
The Maze
The Maze is the least accessible portion of Canyonlands and is not for the faint of heart. This area is a haven for back-country hikers and mountain bikers. You might prepare to spend more than a week here, but understand that this type of terrain requires a high-level of self-sufficiency. There are no amenities offering water, food, gas or lodging in this portion of the park.
The Needles
The Needles district is named for the colorful spires that dominate the area. This portion of the park provides endless opportunities for day and overnight trips. Hike, bike or take an ATV along the many trails that lead to impressive features, such as Tower Ruin and Elephant HIll. Camping is available at Squaw Flat, where you can also participate in ranger-led tours.
The rivers
Winding through the heart of Canyonlands, the Colorado and Green rivers provide opportunities for on-the-water excitement. All boat ramps are located outside the park and there are no roads accessing the river beds. Multiple outfitting companies offer guided raft tours through these world-class stretches of whitewater.
